Finding a Job in Ottawa
When I was doing the job search thing here in Ottawa, searching around for that elusive career (or even a temporary paycheque, really) online was a good way to while away the hours. There's several great sites that list new job openings, but nothing that brings them all together - a bunch of bookmarks is about as organized as you can get.
So I organized my links right here. If you're on the job hunt in Ottawa yourself, you're quite welcome to use them.
- Workopolis lets you search on several different categories, including industry, location and job type. Of course, we can't forget about the "boss panic button", which scores points for its old-school cheesiness. A solid site with lots of listings and a useful search application.
- Monster.ca maintains one of the larger online databases. Mostly tech and sales stuff here.
- The HRDC Federal Job Bank is online and fully searchable. (This link takes you straight to the Ontario search area.) Particularly useful if you're on EI.
- Jobs.gc.ca lists federal government jobs with the Public Service Commission. (Thanks to Erin North for the clarification on this!)
- The Careerclick site culls job listings from several city newspapers, including the Ottawa Citizen. This database is sometimes incomplete, though, so it's best to go pick up the paper when you can.
- HotJobs.ca has improved quite a bit since being taken over by Yahoo.
- Jobvertise has a fine search function, but its job database seems to be considerably smaller than most. (This link goes directly to Ottawa results with no keywords specified.)
- If you're familiar with usenet, the ott.jobs newsgroup is always full of job listings from some of the region's head hunters. (It is rumored that many firms advertise non-existant jobs here in an attempt to build their bank of resumes, though.) If you can't access usenet through a newsreader, Google Groups has you covered.
- The People Bank is an independant staffing service with a fair number of job listings. Their search engine doesn't allow you to search only the Ottawa database, however.
- Canuck Careers was submitted by a reader and seems to have some unique listings... but I find it a mess to navigate through.
- All Ottawa Jobs is a site with an extensive list of local companies who hire through their websites. Great idea.
- Employment Agencies, Recruiters and job pages has a long, raw list of groups that might be able to hook you up with work.
If you have an URL to add to this page, or if you have any comments or questions, why don't you drop me a line? Thanks... and good luck with your job search!
